Kathmandu BernHardt College is proud to celebrate the achievements of alumna Dr. Sakhila Ghimire, who completed her Grade XII in Science from our institution before going on to build an inspiring career in international medical research.

Her Journey from Kalanki to Kathmandu’s BernHardt College
Growing up in Kalanki, Kathmandu, Sakhila was a consistently top-performing student, excelling through her school years and into her time at BernHardt College. After completing her higher secondary education with us, she set out on a path that would take her across two continents in pursuit of scientific excellence.
Studying Abroad: Norway to Germany
In 2010, she moved to Norway on a student visa, earning a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Medical Cell Biology at the University of Bergen. Like many international students, she balanced her studies with part-time work to support herself abroad, showing the same determination and work ethic that marked her academic years. In late 2012, she moved to Germany to pursue her PhD under the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship, focusing her research on complications that can arise after stem cell therapy — work that laid the foundation for her career in immunology.
Life Today
For the past 14 years, Dr. Ghimire has lived and worked in Regensburg, Germany, where she currently serves as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at University Hospital Regensburg. She is the only Nepali among more than 150 doctors and scientists in her department — a distinction that reflects both her expertise and her perseverance. Her research centers on stem cell therapy complications, with a particular focus on how the body’s intestinal system responds to treatment, and more recently, how antibiotics affect intestinal tissue.

Key Achievements and Publications
- 7 research papers published under her own name
- 25+ scientific papers published in collaboration with fellow researchers
- 13.5 years of continuous research experience in Germany
